Tree Tomatoes, also known as Tamarillos come from the Andes of Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and other South American countries. You can find them in different colors, predominantly orange and red. The orange Tree Tomatoes are sweeter than the red ones which are tarty and have a rather astringent flavor.

How to Make Tree Tomato Fruit Juice
In Ecuador, we use Tree Tomatoes to make a fruit juice. To do this you will need to peel the tree tomatoes or boil them for 5 minutes. Once you have done this, blend the Tree Tomatoes and add water and sugar. Sift the Tree Tomato juice to remove all the seeds and you pour it into an appropriately sized juice jar and you can you can now enjoy your Tree Tomato Fruit Juice.
How to make Tree Tomato Chilli Sauce
Tree Tomato Chilli Sauce (Aji de Tomate de Arbol) is easy to make in a few minutes! Firstly, it will be easier to make if you peel the Tree Tomatoes. Once that is out of the way then finely chop some white onions, some coriander, and of course some chillies!
Next, throw them all into your blender and voilá, you have your very own homemade Tree Tomato Chilli Sauce, just like they make it in Ecuador!
Other uses of Tree Tomatoes
You can also boil your Tree Tomatoes and peel them, blend them and then sift them and you will have an amazingly sweet tangy puree! With this tarty Tree tomato puree you can make smoothies, mousses, cheesecake, ice cream, sorbet, and many more sweet and savory creations.
Tree tomato Hummus recipe: To make the recipe you will need the following ingredients:
- 2 cans of Chickpeas
- 1/3 cup Chickpea juice (water that comes in the can)
- 1/2 cup of Tahini
- 2 chopped garlic cloves
- 2 Lemons
- 4 Tree tomatoes
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/2 onion
- sesame seeds

The Process: First you need to charcol your tree tomatoes on a gas flame. Put them direcly into the flame using a tong. Let them burn and turn them so they can burn evenly. Next step open the chickpeas cans and sifted them. Keep 1/3 cup of the juice. After burning the tree tomatoes. Peel them and blend them. Sift the tree tomatoes and you will obtain a nice puree. Add all the ingredients into the blender. Squeeze the 2 lemons and blend until you obtain a nice and smooth texture. Chop your 1/2 onion in fine julienne. Heat your pan. Add some olive oil and your chopped onions. Fry them until they are caramelize. Heat another pan and add your sesame seeds. Roast them until they have a nice brown color. Put the hummus in different containers to storage in the fridge. Add some caramelize onions and roasted sesame seeds on top. Close your container and put them in the fridge. From the recipe I obtain 3 small containers.
Storage your Hummus
I normally keep one container in the fridge and the rest I store them in the freezer so they don’t go off. When I finish the one in the fridge I take one container from the freezer the night before and put it in the fridge. The next day it will be perfect to eat it.

How long does the Hummus last?
When you make Homemade Hummus normally last up to 4 days. In the freezer last up to 4 months but try not to keep it in the freezer for to long because the flavour definitely changes.
